The Other Night

They were having a party in the house. But there were two people who felt they didn’t belong.

She slowly walked out of the house and was surprised to find the guy in black jeans. He was sitting on the floor, smoking.

“Uh…hi..”

He didn’t say anything but looked up at her. He threw the cigarette away and was about to stand up and leave.

“No Dan, please wait. Can I ask you something?”

He sat down again, finally opening his mouth. “Sure, go ahead.”

“I thought you wouldn’t come because they said you’re going on vacation.” She pulled a smile, and sat down beside him.

“It was cancelled.”

“Oh, it sucks.” She was still with her fake smile.

He nodded.

“Have you bought any DVDs these days? I’ve got a lot great movies. And I guess…”

“Stop it Abby, ask what you really want to ask.”

His words were so cold, but they were so clear that she couldn’t run away from them. Thinking of the way she had been treated, tears formed quickly in her eyes.

“Why are you doing this to me?”

“Why am I doing what to you?” He stared at her, saying in his cold tone.

She then felt her cheeks hot and wet as the tears ran down. She wanted to tell him that he hadn’t talked to her for two months already. She wanted to tell him that she no longer felt loved. She wanted to know what was wrong. The words were at her throat but they couldn’t come out. She couldn’t speak any more.

He saw her tears.

“Oh man… What’s your problem?” He almost jumped up. He was easily annoyed by crying girls.

“Now you think it’s me who have a problem?” She wiped her tears with her hands and turned to look at him angrily. “Let me remind you that you’ve been trying to avoid me for two months now, you don’t seem to care about me any more. And let me remind you that I am your girlfriend!”

“What are you talking about?”

“I just want to know why you’re doing all this. What makes you hate me so much?”

“Abby, you’ve got it all wrong. I don’t hate you. Look, I’m not going to argue. I’m getting in.” He opened the door and got inside before she could even make a move.

Maybe it was her fault. If she didn’t make that big mistake and sleep with him the other night, things would not be so different.

It took a few minutes for Abby to clear her thoughts. She found herself inside the house after passing through the door.

All of her friends in the party are chatting and drinking happily.

Dan was there, drinking a bottle of beer. Talking so loudly with a group of his friends. He was definitely having fun. He didn’t even have the time to notice the poor girl staring at him.

In fact, nobody seemed to notice Abby.

Maybe there was just one person who didn’t belong.

Inspired by the story of a friend of mine. Hope she could forget that guy who made her cry…. 5 May 2003
