Early Morning

It was three o’clock in the morning when I heard some screams from the other side of the wall.

I lay on my bed, trying to ignore the noises and get to sleep but I failed. The voices of two women were so loud that they began to drill numerous holes through my head.

I was so awake.

“What have I done to deserve this?” I asked myself while I violently took away the thin blue blanket with anger.

I wanted to know what was so interesting that kept them screaming for more than half an hour when everybody was supposed to be sleeping. Thus, I leaned on the wall and listened carefully.

“Calm down Cathy. There’s nothing between me and Kevin. We’re just discussing ways to help you!”

“I don’t fucking need your help! You betrayed me! You betrayed me!”

“Cathy, I love you. And Kevin loves you. Neither of us cheated you and neither of us will!”

“Go away! Ahh!!”

“Cathy… Cathy don’t!” This was when I heard something like glass fell onto the ground and metal crashing sounds, and finally, a scream filled with horror and fear.

And then there came a long silence.

Figuring out what had happened in the apartment right beside mine, I rushed back on my bed and covered myself entirely with the blue blanket. I could feel myself shivering. I wished it was just a nightmare and it’d go away when I wake up.

However, it was true.

I knew it because I was so awake.

Sometimes it’s good to be a heavy sleeper. 2 August 2004
