A Road of Crushes (Musicians)

New Category! In the “Just For Fun” category, I’ll attempt to make light-hearted posts that are personal (related to me and my life) but a bit more fun to read (and to write).¹

Since the age of four, I started to have crushes on boys. As celebrity crushes is the easiest form of crushes², I have allowed myself to fall for a considerable number of celebrities over the years. And it’s great! In this series of posts, I will introduce my major crushes, with amusing Google image search result³ of course. I will start with the musicians today.

Nick Carter from Backstreet Boys

At the age of 11, before even being a teen, I was a teenybopper whose favourite band was BSB. My first massive crush was on Nick. I don’t know what I was thinking. Maybe it was because Nick was the youngest in the group, hence closest to my age. You’d notice I don’t have much to say about him now – I think he’s okay, but never seems to have much personality. Also, the Paris Hilton images that came up on Google were hilarious.

My ‘love’ for BSB was nothing compared to how crazy I was for the Irish boyband Westlife. I first developed a crush on Shane, and when I found out Shane had a girlfriend (I was 12), I started to like Mark, the one who turned out to be gay. They were marketed as shy country boys from Sligo, and that was probably why I liked them. Looking at them now, they look quite average and certainly don’t seem to be talented musicians. It is embarrassing to think that I once wrote fanfiction about them and printed marriage certificate (yes)!

Fran Healy from Travis

Travis was the first band I got into after the boyband years. It was also when I began to care about the actual music and lyrics. Fran, as the frontman of the Scottish band, naturally attracted me. In his earlier videos such as “More Than Us“, he was more youthful looking and wasn’t losing hair yet. To me, he was physically attractive with a good voice (and dimples) whom I look up to for his musical talent.

Jason Mraz

When I was 19, I randomly discovered Jason Mraz. I don’t usually listen to his type of music but I gave it a try due to his slightly geeky look. I even went through a phase of saving his pictures in a folder. However, I began to find him mildly irritating after a while, possibly because of the “Geek in the Pink” video. He is cute, but now everybody loves him and I don’t really any more. It’s a bit odd!

Chris Conley from Saves the Day

Chris is the third guy from left. He isn’t the prettiest boy in town is he? I must admit this one has more to do with personality than looks – I didn’t know what he looked like until after I had listened to his music for two years. I have always been drawn by his poetic lyrics, some of which he wrote at the age of 18! His appearance has changed quite a lot over the years and I prefer his earlier works, so it’s safe to say the crush was in the past.

Sufjan Stevens

And we’re up to my current crush – Mr. Stevens! He has a voice that everyone loves to fall asleep to, and doesn’t act like a jerk. He is physically attractive (arguable?), talented, creative, mellow, quirky, sensitive and spiritual… Oh, and he plays the banjo!

I don’t know if it’s a healthy transition, but my crushes were getting more introverted and feminine as I grew up. What does it tell you? Anyway, that’s it for the musicians. It’s a tiny list compared to actors since the impression on musicians largely depends on the quality of their music. I hope I will get around to make a post about the actors, at least the google image search will be epic.
